Kids to the Parks

3rd Grade Field Trip To Fort Sumter

History education is a top priority for the Trust. Kids to the Parks is our program that facilitates school field trips to Charleston's historic National Parks. These visits spark excitement and interest in learning. Kids to the Parks has enabled over 5,000 visits since 2012, earning the praise of students and teachers alike. Educators and school administrators throughout Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties have asked us to expand this popular program to send more schoolchildren to the forts every year.

These trips are not possible without a community effort and private donations. The vast majority of local students learn South Carolina and American history without experiencing iconic landmarks and places that were instrumental in shaping that history. Many schools simply do not have the funding. But, they have the will and Kids to the Parks is the way.

Schools integrate the Kids to the Parks field trips into their curricula. National Park Service rangers bring history alive where it happened. For those visiting Fort Sumter, Fort Sumter Tours/SpiritLine Cruises offers the thrill of harbor cruises at a discount. The Fort Sumter - Fort Moultrie Trust coordinates the field trips and pays for bus transportation and other unfunded expenses as needed. The result is a memorable educational experience at minimal cost to the schools and students. Donations will determine how many students we can support this year and how much we can expand the program in the future.

"Thank you so much for arranging this field trip! The students and teachers all had a wonderful time! It was amazing to see the connections the students made to Fort Sumter and the Civil War. They know what we learn in the classroom really happened, but seeing the fort took it to another level for them. We all had a great time and want to thank you again."

"People from across America and around the world visit Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie and the Charles Pinckney Site, including school groups from North Carolina, Georgia, and New York. Kids to the Parks is our way of providing the same educational opportunity to students from here in the Lowcountry."
